Offering courses in Vipassana Meditation as taught by S.N. GOENKA in the tradition of Sayagyi U Ba Khin
The Vancouver Island Vipassana Association (VIVA) is presenting several one-day courses throughout the year for old students who have completed at least one ten-day course with S.N. Goenka or his assistant teachers. One-day courses are an ideal way to refresh your practice. One-day courses are typically conducted by an assistant teacher who is available to answer meditator’s questions during lunch interviews. When an assistant teacher is not available to conduct the course, an authorized old student will play one-day course instructions and there are no interviews to clarify meditators’ questions.
As with all Vipassana courses, donations are the only source of funding.
- Prior registration is not required.
- Bring a cushion, floor mat, and non-perishable vegetarian lunch for yourself.
- There is a small kitchen with microwave, kettle and fridge.
- Please arrive on time so that you do not disturb others.
- There is a 10 minute break after each sitting. If you are coming part-time, please try to arrive during this break period or during the lunch break.
- Please do not enter or leave the meditation hall during the sitting.

The Vipassana Day Sit location is at the Victoria Friends Meeting House, located at 1831 Fern St, not too far from the corner of Fort St and Richmond Rd. You can find it on Google Maps
Because of one-way streets in the area, and streets running at odd angles, it can be tricky by car to find Fern St.
-From downtown Victoria, James Bay, and Fairfield areas, follow Johnson St east as it curves over Pandora Av to become Begbie St (and then Shelbourne St further on). From Begbie St, turn right onto Fern St.
-From Saanich, UVic, and Gordon Head areas, get to Shelbourne St either directly or via Bay St. Follow Shelbourne St past the Jubilee Hospital where Shelbourne curves to the right becoming Begbie St. Fern St is on the left just past the curve.
-From Oak Bay and Rockland areas, get yourself onto Fort St. Once on Fort St, you can find Fern St about mid-way between Richmond Rd and the Oak Bay/Pandora/Fort St junction.
-From the Uplands and Willow Beach areas, your chauffeur will know the way.
Parking on Fern St itself is limited to Residents only on one side of the street, and to 2 Hour parking on the other side of the street. So if you are driving your car, the best option might be to park temporarily outside the Friends Meeting House, unload your sitting gear, and then move your car north to park on Begbie St. While some parking is available on Begbie St, there is plenty of parking available on Vining St, which intersects Begbie St just west of Fern St. From Vining St, it’s about two blocks walking to return to the Friends Meeting House.
Fern St is well serviced by buses running on Johnson St, Shelbourne St, Begbie St, Fort St, and Richmond Rd. See the BC Transit Trip Planner
